Federal & State Income Taxes

Many, if not all, Gaming Commissions require tax clearances from both Federal and State tax offices. If you have never filed income taxes in your current state of residence you will be required to obtain a tax clearance from your previous state. A list of all Department of Revenue offices has been compiled to assist you in achieving that end.

Even though the following list of nine states do not have personal income taxes, their Department of Revenue web sites have been included for the purpose of providing a complete list of all 50 states, Federal and District of Columbia tax sites. If you lived in one of these states before moving to a state with an income tax and the Gaming Commission requires a tax clearance you will have to provide proof of residency for the tax years in question.

6 & 8 Place Bet Presses

The following video demonstrates the pressing of Place Bets 6 & 8.

To "press" a Place Bet means to double the original bet, usually by using the payout of the bet. Doubling a Place Bet may also be referred to a "full press", as opposed to pressing by one unit. e.g. $12 pressed one unit to $18 instead of a full press from $12 to $24.

Generally, when performing a full press, the cap of the Place Bet is handed off to the player and the full amount of the payout is added to the remaining portion of the original bet.

Usually, procedures, rules or concepts are taught in absolute terms, "always" do "A" or "never" do "B". However, there is almost always an exception to the general rule. For the most common 6 & 8 Place Bet presses handing off the cap is the correct way to do it.

A good method to measure if handing off the cap is going to work is to determine if the cap is equal to the number of units of 6 in the bet. $6 divided by 6 equals 1. A $6 Place Bet does have a $1 cap, therefore, handing off the cap does work.

Generally, if the bet doubles, the cap should double too.

Blackjack Card Placement

The traditional method of card placement dictates that the top card is positioned where it covers the lower left quarter of the card beneath. Some may say to cover about a postage stamp sized portion of the lower left bottom card or the lower left corner pip. In either case, the principle is that by being able to see at least three-quarters of the bottom card its value can be determined by the visible pips. Although that concept is true in itself, in real world dealing the combination of speed and human inaccuracy often leads to far more than desired amount of pips being obscured resulting in an unreadable view of the value of a hand.

To account for human error and to provide better game protection it is recommended that all pips be exposed as often as possible. Rarely will a situation occur where a player splits and/or Doubles Down making it necessary to show less than the entire face of all the cards.

Some dealers resist this idea of showing all their pips because they were originally taught different and people tend to not like change. More often than not, when there is a beef on Blackjack over the dealer taking an alleged push or pushing a winner it almost always going to be a difference of one in the value of the disputed hand. The ability of surveillance to provide the correct decision as to who actually won, lost or pushed comes down to proper card placement. When the dealer is absolutely certain they were correct, but, surveillance cannot read the hand it will be deemed "inconclusive" and the player will receive the benefit of the doubt, i.e. get paid.

It does matter, and is pointless to argue, that every card dealt to the players is initially fully exposed and therefore the value of every hand can be determined by "rewinding" back to the beginning of the hand and totaling the hands. The decision will be based on the view of the cards at the end, after the dealer has acted on their hand. So protect yourself and your game by showing all your pips.

Sometimes the player is taking a shot. Sometimes it is an honest mistake on the player's part. Sometimes it is your fault. Everyone makes mistakes. Call surveillance with confidence in the correct decision being made because of your excellent card placement.

Take One, Leave One

The following video clip demonstrates how to press both 6 & 8 Place Bets from $12 each to $18 as well as pressing from $60 each to $90 each.

The physical procedure, the mechanics, for both presses is exactly the same. The only difference is the color of the cheques.

It is good practice to set up four players, two with $12 each on the 6 & 8 and two with $60 each on the 6 & 8. Alternate the players' bet amounts, as done in the video, to re-enforce the fact that the move is less about dollar amount and more about the number of cheques.

Base dealers' hands are not referred to as "left" and "right", but, rather "inside hand" and "outside hand" in relation to the dealers' position at the table. The hand closest to box person is the inside hand as it is also closest to the inside or middle of the table. Obviously, the outside hand would be the hand farthest away from the box person, closest to the outside of the table.

The base dealers' working stacks of cheques are always positioned in front of the dealer the same way they are in the bank with the lower denomination cheques towards the outside and the highest denomination cheques on the inside for game protection.

In the video the student has the $1 white cheques on her left which means she is on third base where her right hand is the inside hand and her left hand is the outside hand. If on second base the dealer's left hand would be the inside hand and the dealer's right hand would be the outside.

The repetitive use of the terms "inside" and "outside" can make the explanation of the moves sound wordy and confusing. So, if you get confused know that it is perfectly normal and just keep replaying the video and re-reading the explanation until you get it. If you feel the need to take a break and rest your brain, do so. Multiple short practice sessions are more productive than one long cram session. As with everything, practice makes perfect. Giving up only makes you unable to do it.

For this move it does not matter which of the two bets wins because they both pay the same $14. We need to use $12 of a $14 payout to press two bets $6 each. So $14 minus the $12 we need is $2. The end result is the player gets $2 change and their 6 & 8 Place Bets are pressed from $12 each to $18 each.

To press the 6 & 8 from $12 each to $18 each cut out the $14 payout directly in front of you in the Come by picking two red cheques with your inside hand and four white cheques with your outside hand. The two stacks of cheques should be cut out in the Come reasonably close together, if not actually touching. Yes, the student in the video does have her payout spaced a bit too far apart for my liking.

With the $14 cut out in the Come, do the following:

Hand off the cap from the inside bet with your outside hand.
Take one white from the Come with your inside hand and place it on top of the $12 outside bet, increasing it to $13.
Leave one red cheque on the outside bet by removing $8 from the outside bet & moving it to the inside bet with your inside hand.
Bring on the remaining cheques in the Come to the outside bet with your outside hand.
Both hands simultaneously adjust both caps.

As you practice this move, say "take one, leave one" as you take one, leave one. Your words should be in sync with your hands.

It is very important to strive for slow and accurate in the beginning. Speed will develop naturally with experience. Fast and sloppy is ugly. Smooth and controlled is your goal. To the beginner's inexperienced eyes everything appears to be moving much faster than it really is.

One of many humorous lines heard around a crap game is, "What killed Jesse James?" This question is asked by someone hoping to see the dice roll a hard 8, a pair of 4's. A 44, as in .44 caliber, that is.

Even funnier than that line are the people who ask that question when the Point is 9 because they claim Jesse James was shot with a .45. Those people are wrong.

In November 2003, the "gun that killed outlaw Jesse James sold at auction for $350000." And as reported, that gun was a .44 caliber nickel-finished Smith & Wesson, not a .45.

So, what killed Jesse James? A forty-four!

Louisiana Casino Job Market

Despite the disastrous national economy Louisiana is doing surprisingly better than most states. With an official national unemployment rate of 7.6% (updated for January) and a real unemployment rate of 13.9% (updated for January), Louisiana comes in 16th out of 51, 50 states and D.C., with an official unemployment rate of 5.9%.

The alternative measures of labor underutilization, not seasonally adjusted, Table A-12, measure U-6, is a whopping 15.4% for January!

As of this posting, 10 out of 15 casinos in Louisiana have Table Games jobs posted at their web sites. Positions vary from property to property, but, include both full and part time Dealer positions, Dual Rate Dealer/Floor Supervisor positions, Full Floor Supervisor positions and Poker Dealer positions.

Keep in mind, just because a position is posted does not necessarily mean you have the required amount of experience for the job. On the other hand, you won't know if you don't try.

If you would like a casino dealer job but have no experience consider a job in a different cash handling department with guest contact such as the cage, slots or food & beverage. Eventually, the casino will likely have an in house dealer school which will cost you nothing. In the meantime, you enjoy the benefits of casino employment.

With statewide layoffs hitting the Mississippi casinos now is probably not a good time to try to break in to the business. According to Biloxi Mayor A.J. Holloway, "about 10 percent of the workforce" has been laid off. Break-ins would stand no chance competing against experienced workers with years on the job.

Missing W-2

If you have not received your W-2 or 1099-R from a former employer and you are looking for information on how to file income taxes without a W-2 you should follow the steps below which are quoted from the IRS web site.

IRS Topic 154 explains what to do in the event an employer fails to send or even refuses to send you your W-2. IRS.gov has recently "upgraded" their site which resulted in this information being moved from its previous location http://www.irs.gov/faqs/faq-kw205.html. That link is no longer good. If you do not receive your Form W-2 or Form 1099-R by January 31st, or your information is incorrect, contact your employer/payer.

If you do not receive the missing or corrected form by February 14th from your employer/payer, you may call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 for assistance. You must provide your name, address (including zip code), phone number, Social Security Number, dates of employment, your employer/payer's name, address (including zip code), and phone number. The IRS will contact the employer/payer for you and request the missing form. IRS will also send you a Form 4852 (PDF), Substitute for Form W-2 or Form 1099-R.

If you do not receive the missing form in sufficient time to file your tax return timely, you may use the Form 4852. How to get a casino dealer job without paying for school.

Choices

When it comes to getting a job as a dealer in a casino you basically have two choices.

Pay A Dealer School

You can come up with thousands of dollars in cash or take out a student loan to attend a school which offers job placement assistance, but, does not guarantee you a job. If the school is accredited and receives government money for their tuition that school must place 70% of their graduates in jobs within 90 days of graduating. After the 90 days passes the school no longer receives credit for placing you in a job so their efforts in seeking employment for students are focused on the latest graduates who help the school meet their 70% placement rate.

If you pay to go to school and then do not get a job you are either out of thousands of dollars in cash, which you could have definitely used for something else in life, or you will be stuck with a student loan which you may not be able to repay.

Defaulting on a government student loan can have devastating consequences for you and your credit. Until you are current in your payments on your student loan you might not ever be able to get other forms of credit. Imagine never being able to get a credit card, never able to get a car loan, never able to buy a house and may never even be able to get basic utilities, like a telephone.

In House Class Is FREE!

A safer means of scoring a dealer job is to go to work at a casino in a department other than Table Games or the Poker Room and attend an in house class for FREE.

The obvious benefit is you already have a job while you wait for a dealer class to begin and for the positions to become available. Depending on how long it takes for the casino to start their class, you may already have their benefits package, including insurance and paid vacation, by time you transfer to your dealing job.

If the casino where you want to work is the one who trains you they have an interest in seeing you get the job.

Before you rush out to apply for a job in security, house keeping or food and beverage, do some research. Consider getting a job as a cage cashier to get familiar with casino cheques and counting lots of money. Go to your local casinos and befriend the dealers and supervisors. Find out how often each casino has a dealer class. Do you have to work there to attend the class? Decide at which casino you should try to break in to the business. It is generally a good idea to start out at a smaller casino to get some experience before moving on to the bigger and better. If you start at the top there is only one way to go, down!

Getting Started

Visit the U.S. Casinos map to find the casinos in your area.

Dress like you are going to a job interview, because you are, and go to the casinos with your plan.

Actively listen. Be aware of the names of the people with whom you speak. Remember who said what, even if it means taking notes after each conversation. Listen more than you talk. Do not appear desperate, even if you are.

Once you get in class be a good student. Be on time. Rarely, if ever, miss class. Get along well with others. Actively participate in class. Study. Maintain a "can do" attitude. Everything is easy, once you know how.

Improper Prop Bets

A good Craps dealer should know how to pay every bet that comes across the table. That does not mean remembering every key to every obscure bet. It definitely does not mean remembering the payouts to every bet either. By the way. If you call the keys "formulas" you should stop.

What it does mean is knowing how to figure out what every bet pays.

Craps students are usually taught, incorrectly, that multi-way bets, such as a Horn Bet, should be bet in proper units. Since a Horn Bet covers the 2, 3, 11 & 12 a Horn "should" be bet in units of four. Wrong.

The truth is, Prop Bets should be bet in an amount which satisfies the table minimum. On most Crap games, take the number of ways a bet is split and follow it with the word "dollar(s)" and that is the minimum amount of the bet. A Horn Bet is a four way bet, therefore, $4 is the minimum Horn. However, the most common Horn Bet is $5. Five dollars is not equally divisible by four units of $1. Yet a $5 Horn is always a bet. The same is true of a $15 and $25 Horn Bet. Not "proper units," but still a bet.

So why then can't a player bet a $5 Three Way Crap? Usually the player won't be allowed to bet it because the dealer or box person doesn't know how to pay it. Weak! A Three Way Crap is a three way bet, so it should be bet at a $3 minimum, not necessarily in units of $3.

When first exposed to such a concept, someone usually asks how an improper three way bet can be paid. The answer is, the same way every other bet is paid, by using the key. The amount of the bet may change, but, the key does not, for the most part.

Back to the Horn Bet. A $4 Horn is $1 on each, the 2, 3, 11 & 12. If the 12 hits it is paid 30 to 1, or $30, minus the $3 which lost to keep the bet up, for a total payout of $27.

The key for the high side of a Horn was developed by asking how to get from a $4 four way bet to a $27 payout. Twenty-seven is very close to 28 and 28 is equally divisible by 4. So, how can we get from $4 to $28? Multiplying 4 by 7 gets us to $28. Now how do we get from $28 to $27? Minus $1? Yes, when the bet is $4, but, what about when the bet is $25? Seven times the bet minus $1 does not work then. A universal key which works for every amount is needed.

What fraction of $4 is $1? One-fourth or a quarter. So the key for the high side of Horn is 7X the bet, minus a quarter of the bet.

A $5 Horn and the high side hits gives us 7 X 5 = 35 - 1.25 = 33.75. Since the seventy-five cents cannot be paid, we round in the house's favor to $33. Rarely will a casino pay a $5 Horn $34. Another way to think of it is, when the key calls for subtracting, round up the portion to be subtracted.

Now we revisit the $5 Three Way Crap. There is more than one key for the low side, Ace-Deuce, of a Three Way Crap. For "proper" three way bets where the winning portion is paid 15 to 1 you can add a zero to 1/3 of the bet and then add the bet. For instance, a $15 Three Way Crap and Ace-Deuce hits we see three nickles, $5, $5, $5. Add a zero to $5 produces $50. Then add the entire $15 bet to $50 which equals the correct payout of $65.

Unfortunately, that key won't work very well for three way bets not divisible by three. So we use another key which works for any amount. Four times the bet, plus 1/3 of the bet. Surely, someone is now thinking, "but 5 isn't equally divisible by 3." Remember the $5 Horn Bet? It isn't equally divisible by 4, yet we can pay it.

Any time there is breakage, the portion of the payout which cannot be paid, coin change, we round in the house's favor. So 4 X $5 = $20 + 1.67 = $21.76, rounded in the house's favor is $21. Another way to think of it is, when the key calls for adding, rounded down the portion to be added.

Let's try another amount. A $25 Hi-Lo-Yo and Yo hits. 4X the bet, plus 1/3 of the bet: 4 X 25 = 100 + 8.33 = 108.33, rounded down is $108. Another way to think of it is when the key calls for adding, round the bet down to the next number equally divisible by 3. In this case, 24. One-third of 24 is 8. Eight plus 100 is 108, the correct answer.

One more. A $100 Three Way 7 and any 7 hits. 4 X 100 = 400 + 33 = 433. Easy!

Another scenario, which is very possible, is a $5 Horn Bet and the high side hits and is parlayed, that is, the entire amount of the winnings are added to the original bet, and hits again on the high side. $5 pays $33. Now $38 gets 7x the bet, minus a quarter of the bet.

Rather than try to multiply 38 by 7 we round 38 up to 40 which is much easier to work with. 40 X 7 = 280. But, we added 2 to 38 to get to 40 and we paid that extra $2 7X, or $14. So we have to take that $14 back. 280 - 14 = 266. Now 266 minus a quarter of 38. Since 38 is not equally divisible by 4 we round up to the next number which is divisible by 4, 40. Now subtract a quarter of 40, 10, from 266, which equals $256. A $5 Horn bet and the high hits and is parlayed and the high side hits again pays $256.

Now you know how to pay improper bets. Like everything else, you must practice if you want to get good at it.

A $36 Place Bet On the 5 & 9 Is Bad

A Place Bet on the 5 & 9 has a 4% house advantage which makes it a bad bet when judged by the 2% standard.

The house edge on a Place Bet 5/9 can be calculated as follows.

The 5/9 are bet in units of $5.00. With the true odds of 3:2 a $5.00 bet on the 5/9 should pay $7.50, but, it doesn’t. It actually pays $7.00. The sum of the bet, $5.00, plus what the bet should pay according to the true odds, $7.50, is $12.50. The sum of the $5.00 bet and the actual $7.00 payoff is $12.00. The difference between $12.50 and $12.00 is $0.50.

$0.50 divided by $12.50 is 0.04. When expressed as a percentage equals 4%. The house edge on a Place Bet 5/9 is 4%.

Now let's do the same math, but, this time for $36 5/9.

According to the true odds, $36 should pay $54. But of course, it doesn't. It pays $50. The $36 bet plus the $54 it should pay equals $90. The $36 bet plus the $50 it actually pays equals $86. The difference between 90 and 86 is 4. Four divided by 90 equals 0.04444 or 4.44%.

Betting $36 on the 5/9 in order to receive an even $50 instead of dropping $1 for $50 increases the already bad 4% house edge to 4.44%. That is not a good move.

The moral of the story? If you are going to bet a 5/9 Place Bet, bet in units of $5.

How to Use The Gaming Instructor Blog

The Gaming Instructor blog was built in and designed for optimum viewing in Firefox tabbed browsing.

With Firefox and the recommended Add-ons installed you are now ready to view this site as intended.

If you are looking for a casino job, click on U.S. Casinos at the top of the page. You will be taken to a map of the U.S. in the same tab. Then, if you click on a state to view a list of the casinos in that state you again will stay in that tab. When you begin to click on casino web sites however, those sites will open in a new tab to the right of the current tab.

Opening external links next to the current tab creates a bread crumb trail in the browser window so users can see how they ended up where they are. Opening links in tabs also enables users to Bookmark All Tabs in folder for later use. When you click on the bookmarked folder you will have the option to Open All in Tabs with one click instead of having to retrace your steps or clicking on several different Bookmarks.

The more Internet savvy user may say they prefer to choose for themselves to right click on the link and select to open in a new window or tab. Right clicking adds two more clicks to the process. Given the potentially large number of sites visited in the user's effort to find employment or to relocate, right clicking would increase steps along the way.

Some say that if they want to know how they got to where they are they will simply click on the back button in their browser. Unfortunately, some sites use code which breaks the back button. This blog is designed for the less experienced user who is more concerned with learning about gaming knowledge and employment and less concerned with figuring out why their browser won't go back.

Hollywood Casino Baton Rouge Human Resources

There are two routes one can take from New Orleans/Kenner to Hollywood Casino Baton Rouge. Most people would be inclined to take I-10 the entire way as it is the most direct route. However, due to road construction and general traffic conditions on I-10 I personally use and recommend taking I-55 North to I-12 West which puts you right back on I-10 in Baton Rouge, bypassing all the bad traffic areas.

Here are the driving directions taking I-10 all the way from Kenner to Hollywood Casino Baton Rouge Human Resources located at 2120 North 3rd Street in Baton Rouge.

On the way to Human Resources you will pass Hollywood Casino on the left. Human Resources is 0.4 miles, about 47 seconds, farther down on the right, so be in the right lane. River Road North becomes 3RD St after the S-turn. When you see Riverview Condominiums on the left and TNT Welding Supplies on the right, the next building on your right is Hollywood Casino Human Resources. If you cross railroad tracks you have gone too far.

Applying For and Getting the Job

Go There

If you are seeking a casino dealer job you should go to the casino where you want to work dressed to impress and speak with a dealer either on a dead game or catch one on break to find out who does the hiring and/or the auditions. Introduce yourself to that person or persons and express your desire to work there. Give them a little background on yourself like what games you deal, how much experience you have and what your goals are. Ask where human resources is and go there to fill out your application.

Avoid Online Applications

Although online applications may seem like they are more convenient than having to get dressed and drive to a casino to fill out the same online application at Human Resources, there are definite benefits to going there.

The obvious benefit is that you get face time with another person. Now you are not just another computer form, but a real live person with a face to go with the name.

Online applications have been known to have their glitches. Too often, one goes through the trouble of filling out the online application to end up having the system fail and the application does not take for some reason. If there is a computer glitch in your application and you are at Human Resources an HR representative can help you with the problem. Now they really remember you because you are the one they helped.

Apply Online, If You Must

Sometimes applying online is unavoidable. If you are applying for an out of town job or you need to apply at multiple locations quickly, then apply online.

Be Efficient

Before applying for the job, whether in person or online, you should have a well organized resume/application ready for reference. Remembering 10 years of residence history and 10 years of work history can be a bit much for some. If applying in person bring a print out of your resume and refer to it as you complete your application. Hand scribbled notes are not good.

When applying online, especially at more than one website, use an electronic version of your resume. The best thing to do is write up your resume in an email and save it for future use. After you have proof read it you can simply copy and paste into the online form. This will prevent careless typos and make your application more professional. Be sure to use proper grammar. Correct spelling, punctuation and proper use of upper and lower case letters make you look like you care. And you should care!

Web Based Email, Not ISP

Examples of web based email are Yahoo!, Hotmail or Gmail. ISP or Internet Service Provider email is email that comes with your Internet service from providers such as Cox Cable or Road Runner. You should not use ISP email to store your resume because if you move and you cancel your service you will lose your resume in that email account.

Gustav FEMA Assistance Update

I just called the FEMA Individual Assistance hot line at 1-800-621-3362. You can apply online, but, I strongly advise against it. Speaking with a real person is the thing to do so there are no doubts about whether or not you gave the best answer.

My entire phone call lasted 37 minutes with hold time and application time.

You do not have to have insurance or suffered a property loss to receive assistance.

The person taking your information cannot tell you for what, if any, assistance you qualify.

Be prepared to give the following information:

Also, beware of some text message/email hoax about contacting the Red Cross for money at 603-413-4133. The number seems to be associated with a Madden message board. The 603 area code is in New Hampshire so I called it but all circuits were busy and I don't care enough about a fake number to call again.

The Red Cross's real number is 866-483-4636. I don't know what they are doing for Gustav evacuees though.

The most common reasons for failure to obtain a gaming license are as follows:

You have been convicted, pled guilty or nolo contendre to any offense punishable by imprisonment of more than one year, AND less than 10 years have elapsed since the completion of sentence, probation, or parole.
You have been convicted of any theft related activity within the last 5 years, including: possession of stolen goods, misappropriation of property/funds, and fraud.
If you have been convicted of any gambling related activity within the past 5 years.
You have any violent crime convictions covered by LA Title 14 RS 14:2(B).
You have 3 or more drug related misdemeanor convictions.
You are currently involved in an ongoing prosecution or pending charge.
You lie or make false statements on your licensing application.
You are in default on a student loan – account must be current.¹
You are not current in the filing of all state and federal income taxes, and in the payment of all taxes, penalties, and interest due.
You are not current in the payment of child support
You have any outstanding traffic/parking tickets.
You fail the mandatory drug test. ²

You must satisfactorily resolve these issues prior to applying for a gaming license. Do not wait until you are offered a job before resolving these matters. YOU WILL NOT BE HIRED and in some cases you will have to wait up to six months before applying again.

1 In each of these instances you must be current AND be able to document that fact, before you can obtain your license.

2 You will be unable to re-apply for your license for 6 months.

6 & 8 Place Bets

Generally, the cap on a 6/8 Place Bet will represent the number of units of 6 in the bet. The cap added to the entire bet will produce the payout for the bet when the cap does equal the number of units of 6 in the bet.

From $6 to $96 there are three out of sixteen bets whose cap does not equal the number of units of six in the bet, when set up properly. Those three bets are $54, $78 and $84. When setup properly the caps should be $4, $3 and $9 respectively. However, it is possible to set up these bets in such a way that the cap does represent the number of units of 6 in the bet.

Transferring your tapes and LP's to your computer or CD's is fairly easy and inexpensive.

First, check your computer to ensure it does have a MIC IN jack. If you do have a MIC IN jack proceed.

Next, check the headphone jack on the stereo equipment you will be using to the play the tapes or LP's to see if the jack is 6.3mm or 3.5mm. Most people are also going to want cable TV and Internet access.

Rental Moving Truck

Never assume one rental truck company will be cheaper than another. Always check all rental companies and make reservations as far in advance as possible. Just like plane tickets, vehicle rentals are cheaper with the greatest advance notice.

Fuel Cost

Use Google Maps to find out how far it is to where you are moving. Then use the AAA Fuel Cost Calculator to to determine how much it will cost to fuel the moving truck. Typically, moving trucks get around 5 miles per gallon.

Postal Service

Before you move be sure to forward your mail. Keep in mind that if you use the United States Postal Service Official Change of Address Form your address may end up on a mailing list. When it comes to your bills don't rely on the Post Office to forward your mail. Call your credit card companies and other bills and change your address directly with them.

It is a very good idea to keep records of your change of address. Consider using a paper billed cell phone or VoIP service so you can prove the time and date of your phone call. Even making a video recording of the conversation may save you a major headache later if a business fails to forward your bill and you end up with late charges or service interruptions.

Visualize yourself in a certain situation. If you know you will have a job interview or you will attend a party, imagine yourself there. Go through different situations in your mind.
Make a list of questions you might be asked (in an interview, if that's what you're practicing for) or of topics you may be discussing at a social event. Select appropriate topics for social conversations from your list.
Research the topics. More background information will make it easier for you to contribute to the conversation. Research good answers to interview questions.
Mark interview questions/topics on your list that may make you share more than you'd like or that may aggravate you because you feel strongly about them.

Calculating House Edge

Calculating the house edge or house advantage on most craps bets can be illustrated using cheques with the exception of the Pass Line/Come and Don’t Pass/Don’t Come as those calculations are more complex.

The house edge on a Place Bet 6/8 can be calculated as follows.

The 6/8 are bet in units of $6.00. With the true odds of 6:5 a $6.00 bet on the 6/8 should pay $7.20, but, it doesn’t. It actually pays $7.00. The sum of the bet, $6.00, plus what the bet should pay according to the true odds, $7.20, is $13.20. The sum of the $6.00 bet and the actual $7.00 payoff is $13.00. The difference between $13.20 and $13.00 is 20¢.

20¢ divided by $13.20 is 0.0151515 or 0.0152. When expressed as a percentage equals 1.52%. The house edge on a Place Bet 6/8 is 1.52%.

The house edge on a Place Bet 5/9 can be calculated as follows.

50¢ divided by $12.50 is 0.04. When expressed as a percentage equals 4%. The house edge on a Place Bet 5/9 is 4%.

The house edge on a Place Bet 4/10 can be calculated as follows.

The 4/10 are bet in units of $5.00. With the true odds of 2:1 a $5.00 bet on the 4/10 should pay $10.00, but, it doesn’t. It actually pays $9.00. The sum of the bet, $5.00, plus what the bet should pay according to the true odds, $10.00, is $15.00. The sum of the $5 bet and the actual $9.00 payoff is $14.00. The difference between $15.00 and $14.00 is $1.00.

$1.00 divided by $15.00 is 0.0666666 or 0.0667. When expressed as a percentage equals 6.67%. The house edge on a Place Bet 4/10 is 6.67%.

Now that we understand how to calculate the house edge or house advantage we can apply the same technique to the Big 6 & 8, the Field and all Prop bets.

A dealer may not know the house advantage on bets and still be good enough to deal the game, but, a good dealer strives to be better than “good enough”. Knowing the house advantages is not necessary to physically deal a game, but, knowing the house edge is a part of your game knowledge.

Missing Your Form W-2?

IRS TAX TIP 2008-24

Did you get your W-2? These documents are essential to filling out most individual tax returns. You should receive a Form W-2, Wage and Tax Statement, from each of your employers each year. Employers have until January 31, 2008 to provide or send you a 2007 W-2 earnings statement either electronically or in paper form. You should allow two weeks to receive your W-2 from employers who send them by mail.

If you do not receive your Form W-2, contact your employer to inquire if and when the W-2 was mailed. If it was mailed, it may have been returned to your employer because of an incorrect or incomplete address. After contacting your employer, allow a reasonable amount of time for your employer to resend or to issue the W-2.

If you still do not receive your W-2 by February 15th, contact the IRS for assistance at 800-829-1040. When you call, have the following information:

Employer's name, address, city, and state, including zip code.
Your name, address, city and state, including zip code, and Social Security number, and

An estimate of the wages you earned, the federal income tax withheld, and the period you worked for that employer. The estimate should be based on year-to-date information from your final pay stub or leave-and-earnings statement, if possible.

If you misplaced your W-2, contact your employer. Your employer can replace the lost form with a “reissued statement.” Be aware that your employer is allowed to charge you a fee for providing you with a new W-2.

You still must file your tax return on time even if you do not receive your Form W-2. If you do not receive the missing information in time to file, you may use Form 4852, Substitute for Form W-2, Wage and Tax Statement. Attach Form 4852 to the return, estimating income and withholding taxes as accurately as possible. There may be a delay in any refund due while the information is verified.

On occasion you may get back conflicting documents. You may receive a Form W-2 or W-2C (corrected form) after you filed your return using Form 4852, and the information differs from what you reported on your return. If this happens, you must amend your return by filing a Form 1040X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return.

Form 4852, Form 1040X, and instructions are available on the IRS Web site, IRS.gov or by calling 800-TAX-FORM (800-829-3676).

Remember that for the genuine IRS Web site be sure to use .gov. Don't be confused by internet sites that end in .com, .net, .org or other designations instead of .gov. The address of the official IRS governmental Web site is www.irs.gov.

Why $500 Inside is "No Bet"

Occasionally you may have a player walk up and toss you a purple and ask for $500 Inside. That is "no bet this roll."

If you have the time before the dice move you can ask how the player would like that set up, but, you should not assume anything.

Five hundred Inside is a shot waiting to happen. Although the non-shot-taker may take offense to being "no bet" on that roll it is good game protection and nothing less than proper procedure.

The honest player may claim, "there's only one way to set up that bet." Unfortunately, their honesty makes them naive. There are many ways to set up $500 Inside. The two best ways for a shot taker are pictured below along with the what most people mean by $500 Inside.

If you assume the player wants $150 each on the 6 & 8 and $100 each on the 5 & 9 the shot taker will wait for the roll and then say they didn't want what you set up.

If the 5 rolls the shot taker will claim what they really wanted was a $5 9, $30 each on the 6 & 8 and $435 on the 5. Of course. That way they make $609. If the 6 rolls the shot taker will claim they really wanted $10 each on the 5 & 9, a $30 8 and a $450 6. Then they make $525.

In either case the shot taker stands to at least double their money because the dealer opened themselves up to a shot by booking an improper bet.

A proper bet in a series of Place Bets, i.e. Across, Inside or Outside, are made in an equal number of units on every number, not an equal dollar amount nor a variety of dollar amounts which, individually, are proper bets. Equal units on every number and equal units only comprise a proper series of Place Bets.

But the 4 & 10 don't get paid 2 to 1 because the house needs to have an advantage on the bet in order to keep the lights on. So, the casino keeps $1. One dollar less than $10 to $5 is $9 to $5. Hence, 4 & 10 Place Bets are paid 9 to 5.

On the 5 & 9 a $5 bet should be paid $7.50 according to the True Odds of 3 to 2. But the 5 & 9 don't get paid 3 to 2 because the house needs to maintain an advantage. So, the casino keeps the 50¢. Fifty cents less than $7.50 to $5 is $7 to $5. Hence, 5 & 9 Place Bets are paid 7 to 5.

On the 6 & 8 a $6 bet should be paid $7.20 according to the True Odds of 6 to 5. But, again, the 6 & 8 don't get paid 6 to 5 because the house needs to have the advantage. So, the casino keeps the 20¢. Twenty cents less than $7.20 to $6 is $7 to $6. Hence, 6 & 8 Place Bets are paid 7 to 6.

Take care of the administrative stuff. Visit Human Resources, security, your manager, and anybody else you need to see to get started. Ask questions if you need to.
- Fill out whatever paperwork is necessary and get it turned in promptly. Note that applications for insurance, retirement, or other benefits may need to be turned in within a certain amount of time after starting the job for them to be accepted. If you're not sure about policies, procedures, or deadlines, ask.
- Obtain (or apply for) your badge, uniform, and any keys you will need. Make sure to get a temporary badge if your permanent one will take some time to arrive.

- Make friends. As you start to develop a professional rapport with some people, invite them to have coffee or lunch with you someday. Getting outside the workplace can do wonders for camaraderie.
Learn your work area and, as appropriate, set it up.

Step-by-step Gaming License Instructions

Preface

The two primary concerns of gaming license applicants are usually, "will bad credit prevent me from getting a gaming license" and "will an arrest prevent me from getting a gaming license?" In most cases the answer is "no." If bad credit and minor arrests prevented the approval of gaming licenses there would be no casinos.

As a gaming commission investigator once said, "if you didn't have bad credit, you wouldn't be American." Typical bad credit will not prevent you from getting a gaming license. Gaming license applications ask if the applicant has ever filed bankruptcy. If the answer is "yes" supporting documentation must be provided. So, even bankruptcy should not prevent an applicant from obtaining a license.

The type of bad credit that will prevent someone from being approved for a license is that which is the result of fraud, lying, cheating and stealing or defaulting on a student loan. Honesty is the issue.

Having a criminal record does not necessarily mean you will not get a license either. Some offenses which may cause the denial of a license do have time limits applied which vary and range from 1 year, to 3, 5 or 10 years, depending on the offense. The standards from jurisdiction to jurisdiction are similar, but, can have specific significant differences. It is highly likely that a felony record will mean no license. However, there are exceptions even to that general rule of thumb.

In Louisiana, You Probably Won't Get A License If RS 14:2 B Applies to You.

Usually, misdemeanors will not prevent the approval of a gaming license. Typically, what really matters is the nature of the offense. Any offense related to gaming/gambling, theft, fraud, larceny, perjury/lying, deception, forgery or conspiracy/organized crime will guarantee denial of the application.

If you have any doubt or concerns about your ability to obtain a gaming license you should contact the enforcement agency with whom you would be applying and explain your situation to an investigator before you even attempt to gather your background information. Don't worry, you will not be arrested for being honest about your situation, unless you are currently wanted by law enforcement.

Every case is handled on an individual basis. Exceptions to black and white rules do occur. Honesty and courtesy go a long way.

The Application

Print a copy of the Louisiana Non-Key Gaming Employee Permit Application , (other Gaming License Applications Available Online). Read the application instructions carefully before entering any information. Fill it out as complete and accurately as possible, according to the instructions. Louisiana applications must be completed in blue ink only. All jurisdictions require the use of either blue or black ink. No other color ink is ever appropriate.

Military Service

If you ever served in the military you will need to provide DD Form 214, Discharge Papers and Separation Documents. This is a process which takes time and therefore should be acted upon quickly.

Criminal, Investigatory and Civil Proceedings

Criminal Background

Read Page 6 carefully and provide all requested documentation.

If you have "ever been detained, issued a summons or citation, arrested, charged, indicted or forfeited bail for any criminal offense or violation for any reason whatsoever" you will need to supply supporting documentation. The sooner you start working on this information the better. Gathering criminal background documents is likely to be the most time consuming of all information required in any gaming license application.

Do not make the mistake to believe that your arrest was so long ago that the gaming commission won't find it or that they don't care because it was trivial. Where the application asks if you have "ever" been arrested it means ever. Failure to provide or withholding of requested information can result in at least postponing the approval of your license or result in arrest and/or fines of up to $10,000.00.

Contact the parish or county Clerk of Courts where the offense occurred and ask for certified court disposition papers. If disposition papers do not exist for whatever reason obtain something in writing proving your effort to obtain the required documents.

Civil Proceedings

If you have ever been to court or used an attorney for any reason you probably will need to "Attach certified copies of documents relating to each matter to this application."

Tax Clearance

Page 11 of the Louisiana Non-Key Gaming Employee Permit Application is a Louisiana Tax Clearance form which needs to be signed and stamped by the Louisiana Department of Revenue. It is a good idea to obtain your tax clearance sooner rather than later. If you are not able to be cleared it could take a significant amount of time to straighten out your tax issue.

Proper Attire Required

All students need to invest in at least one tuxedo shirt. It is industry standard to wear solid black pants and a white tux shirt during auditions. Your black pants should not be cotton as cotton fades and looks bad. The casino will provide you with uniform shirts, however, you will have to supply your own black pants. A standard wing tipped tuxedo shirt is exactly what you need.

Those students wishing to deal outside functions will have a greater need for a tuxedo shirt and a black bow tie. If you intend to deal parties it may be a good idea to have more than one shirt, just in case.

You may also want to check with B.J., the poker instructor, for a bow tie.

You will also need nice black shoes. Plain black sneakers are generally allowed for comfort, but, they cannot be black basket ball shoes or any type of sneaker with any color other than black on them.
